Qualifications and experience
Do I need a teaching qualification to tutor with MyIT?
Yes. You need a degree and a teaching qualification. That does not have to be a formal teaching degree: a 120-hour TEFL, a Cambridge CELTA or a Trinity CertTESOL all count. If you are not sure whether what you have counts, apply and tell us.
Do I need a TEFL certificate?
You need a teaching qualification, and a 120-hour TEFL is the most common route to one. A Cambridge CELTA or a Trinity CertTESOL is stronger again, particularly for English and exam work, and we will advise you honestly on which suits you before you enrol anywhere.
Do I need SACE registration?
No. SACE registration is a condition of employment at a school, not a requirement for private online tutoring. If you have it, tell us and we will show it on your profile, because South African parents recognise it.
Can I tutor online with no experience?
If you are a fresh graduate from a teacher training course, talk to us. If this is not the case for you, it is difficult to place you without teaching experience. Do, however, communicate what skills or experience you might have that would support your ability to be slowly introduced to teaching.
Money
How much can I earn as an online tutor in South Africa?
That is largely up to you, because you set your own hourly rate. For comparison: South African tutoring marketplaces typically advertise between R150 and R270 an hour before commission, the big international platforms take between 18% and 33% of what you charge, and online ESL companies commonly pay a fixed four to five US dollars an hour. With MyIT there is no commission taken off your rate at all.
Does MyIT take commission from my lesson fee?
No. You set your rate and you keep it.
Do you charge the student more than you pay me?
Yes. You set your rate and you receive it in full. What the student pays is set by us, and the difference is how MyIT covers marketing, finding and matching students, the portal, support and the lesson report system. It is a margin on top of your rate, never a cut of it.
How and when do I get paid?
Monthly. On the 1st we total your lessons and the portal writes your invoice for you; you check it, query anything that looks wrong, and approve it. On the 10th you are paid, in Rand, through Airwallex into your South African bank account.
Are trial lessons paid?
Yes. A MyIT trial is fifteen minutes and you are paid for it every time, whether or not the student goes on to book. It is free for the student and paid for by us.
What happens if a student cancels?
Where possible the lesson is rescheduled rather than written off, and your planning carries over, so you don’t need to prepare the same lesson twice.
Is there a joining fee?
No. There is no fee to join MyIT, no fee for training, and no fee to be listed. You will never pay MyIT anything at all. Two costs are paid to other people, not to us: a police clearance costs R190, paid directly to the South African Police Service, and is needed only once we have accepted you and before you teach anyone under 18; and moving your monthly payment into your bank account costs about one per cent. If you do not yet hold a teaching qualification you will need to take one, and those courses are run by accredited providers and charged by them. We have arrangements with some course providers, and we will tell you when that is the case. We will give you honest advice before you enrol anywhere.
Trust and how we work
How do I know this is not a scam?
A fair question, and one worth asking of anybody. Teachers in South Africa are being targeted right now by fake job offers demanding "authorisation fees" over WhatsApp. So: you will never pay MyIT anything. Your contract is with MyIT Global, part of the Train The Teacher group, which has been training and managing teachers since 2008.
Which company will I be contracting with?
MyIT Global. That is the name that will appear on your contract and on your payments, so if you ever see a different company name asking you for anything, treat it as a warning sign. MyIT is part of the Train The Teacher group, which has been training and managing teachers since 2008.
Can my account be closed without warning?
No. If anything changes about your work with us, a person will tell you, and tell you why. You will always know who to ask.
Will AI replace tutors?
Not at MyIT. One of our three founding principles is that AI supports tutors and never replaces them. It does the matching and the admin. AI does not do the teaching, and it never will.
Is this a job or freelance work?
Freelance. You work as an independent contractor, you invoice us monthly, and there is no exclusivity clause and no minimum hours. It is remote teaching work you control, not employment, which is why you set the rate rather than us.
Practical questions
What equipment and internet speed do I need?
A laptop or desktop with an HD webcam and a headset, and internet at around 20 Mbps up and down. Use a cable rather than wifi if you can. A quiet room with a plain background and good lighting are essential.
What happens if you lose power or connectivity?
Plan for it and set your availability accordingly. National load shedding has been suspended since May 2025, but load reduction still affects some areas, typically between 05:00 and 09:00 and again between 17:00 and 22:00. Keep a tested UPS or inverter with mobile data as a backup, and avoid offering availability in your local load reduction windows. We would far rather know in advance than have a student sitting in an empty lesson.
Do I need to live in a particular city?
No. You can tutor from anywhere in South Africa with reliable internet and power: Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha or a small town. Where you live matters far less than your connection and your quiet room.
How many hours a week can I teach?
As many or as few as you want. There is no minimum. Many of our tutors teach in the evenings alongside a full-time teaching job.
Where are the students, and what time zones will I work in?
Our students come to us from around the world, and new markets open as we grow. South Africa sits in a convenient time zone for international teaching: Asia’s afternoon falls in your morning, Europe’s working day runs alongside your own, and the Americas wake as your afternoon starts. Early mornings and evenings are the busiest periods.
Can I tutor part-time alongside a full-time teaching job?
Yes, and many of our tutors do. You are an independent contractor and you tell us when you are available.
How long before I get my first student?
It depends on your subject and your availability, and we would rather be honest than optimistic. We only recruit in subjects where we already have demand, so if we take you on it is because we expect to match you.
How long does the application take?
About five minutes to apply. We reply within 48 hours, and most tutors are interviewed and matched within two weeks.
